49ers Steamroll Cowboys in Week 5 Sunday Night Football
The San Francisco 49ers dominated the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5 of the 2023 NFL season, winning 42-10 in a primetime matchup on Sunday Night Football.
The 49ers got off to a fast start, scoring a touchdown on their opening drive. George Kittle caught a 19-yard pass from Brock Purdy to give San Francisco a 7-0 lead.
The Cowboys responded with a field goal on their next drive, but the 49ers continued to pour it on. Purdy threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey to make it 14-3.
The Cowboys turned the ball over on their next possession, and the 49ers capitalized. Purdy threw his third touchdown pass of the night, a 27-yarder to Deebo Samuel, to give San Francisco a 21-3 lead at halftime.
The 49ers didn't let up in the second half. They scored touchdowns on their first two drives to extend their lead to 35-3.
The Cowboys were finally able to get into the end zone late in the third quarter, but the 49ers answered with a touchdown of their own to make it 42-10.
The 49ers' defense was dominant all night, holding the Cowboys to just 283 yards of total offense. Micah Parsons had a sack for the Cowboys, but it wasn't enough to slow down the 49ers' attack.
Purdy finished the game with 251 passing yards and four touchdowns. McCaffrey rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown, and Samuel caught six passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.
The win improves the 49ers' record to 4-1, while the Cowboys fall to 3-2. The 49ers are now the favorites to win the NFC West, while the Cowboys are in danger of falling behind the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders in the NFC East.
Here are some of the highlights from the game:
- George Kittle's 19-yard touchdown reception: Kittle lined up in the slot and got open on a slant route. Purdy hit him in stride, and Kittle powered through a defender to get into the end zone.
- Christian McCaffrey's 35-yard touchdown reception: McCaffrey lined up out wide and ran a post route. Purdy threw the ball behind him, but McCaffrey made a leaping catch and kept his feet inbounds.
- Deebo Samuel's 27-yard touchdown reception: Samuel lined up in the slot and ran a deep crossing route. Purdy threw the ball over the middle, and Samuel made a difficult catch in stride.
- Fred Warner's interception: Warner intercepted a Dak Prescott pass in the first quarter. He returned the interception 25 yards to set up a 49ers touchdown.
- Nick Bosa's sack: Bosa sacked Prescott on the Cowboys' first drive of the second half. It was Bosa's third sack of the season.
The 49ers' victory over the Cowboys was a statement game. They showed that they are one of the best teams in the NFC. The Cowboys, on the other hand, need to figure out how to get their offense going. If they don't, they could be in danger of missing the playoffs.
